What is Claws for Change?
My name is Ree and I'm the founder and principal designer of Claws For Change.
We're a small family business, based in Western Australia, which designs and sells unique hair claws inspired by our natural world.
We designed our first hair claw in 2023 and now have thousands of happy customers right across the world.
Conservation of our incredible planet is a core value of our business and we strive to make our plant-based products zero waste, while using only responsibly sourced materials and partners.
With every hair claw sold, we donate $5 to amazing organisations dedicated to supporting wildlife and habitat
preservation. With our ocean collection, the proceeds go directly to the Australian Marine Conservation Society.
What are the hair claws made from?
All of our claws are made from plant-based cellulose acetate, a bio-based polymer derived from renewable plant sources like wood pulp.
These acetates offer eco-friendliness due to their superior biodegradability compared to traditional plastics.
But is that a plastic?
Technically, yes, our hair claws could be classed as a plastic product. But wait, it's not as simple as that.
Plastic is simply the name given to any material that is malleable and can be moulded into solid objects, including a wide range of synthetic, semi-synthetic and organic compounds.
Plastics are usually synthetic and most commonly derived from petrochemicals.
However, the plant-based cellulose acetate used in our claws do not contain petroleum or any other petrochemical.
They are derived from natural renewable fibres like those found in cotton and wood pulp.
Cellulose acetate allows the claw to remain plenty durable and flexible enough for use, yet ultimately have far greater rates of biodegradability.
Is this claw suitable for my hair?
We have a range of claws to suit all hair types. Check out our size and style guide for direction on which claw might suit your needs best.
Still not sure, just drop me a message and I’d be happy to help.
I’ve seen similar looking claws on overseas websites. What’s all that about?
This is a tough subject to talk about, but here we go...
We are aware of several companies selling almost identical looking claws to ours.
Most of these sellers have blocked us on social media, so we no longer see their adverts, but many of our lovely customers do reach out to let us know about the ads and listings they are seeing.
We design our products here in Western Australia. It takes us about 6 months to design, test and ultimately release a product.
You’ll may find that our newer releases can’t be found anywhere else, but unfortunately most of our designs get copied within about 2 to 3 weeks. 😭💔
This is what you are seeing when you see similar claws available elsewhere.
It’s incredibly frustrating
and upsetting and we are doing everything we can to protect our designs. We have reported a number of sellers for intellectual property violations, but (again) unfortunately there is not a lot of protection when it comes to hair accessories and this happens to many other designers.
These other claws that you might see can look the same in photos (sometimes because some of them simply steal the photos from our website and Instagram 😡), but the
build and material quality is certainly not the same. The claws we sell simply can’t be made at the price these others are selling for and making a profit on.
All of our claws have our
stamp on the inside, so if you do decide to purchase one you’ll know it’s one of ours, that it’s guaranteed to be donating to conservation efforts and are made with plant-based cellulose acetate.
Thank you for taking the time
to read this and for your support on this issue.
